KUKAI JOURNEY OF THE SKY 曼荼羅

曼荼羅に日本人が初めて出会ったのは、今から1200年ほど前の平安時代初期です。日本に曼荼羅をもたらしたのは、のちに弘法大師と名づけられた空海です。空海は遣唐使として中国の唐にわたり、中国密教界の最高峰にあった師の恵果から唯一の正当な後継者として認められました。

そして、曼荼羅をはじめ重要な経典や法具を恵果から直接伝授されたのです。
空海が持ち帰った曼荼羅には2つの種類、胎蔵曼荼羅と金剛界曼荼羅がありました。胎蔵曼荼羅は釈迦の悟りに至るプロセスを、金剛界曼荼羅は悟りの結果として得られる知恵の全体像を図解したものです。

金剛界曼荼羅は、全体が九つの区画に分けられ、それぞれの区画に全体と同じパターンが埋め込まれています。つまり、部分をとっても全体と同じパターンが現れるわけです。このような構造をフラクタルといいます。金剛界曼荼羅のようなフラクタル形状は、正方形を9つの部分に分割して真ん中を取り除くことを繰り返せば作ることができます。

これは平面上のフラクタルとして知られるシェルピンスキーのカーペットと呼ばれています。金剛界曼荼羅は大日如来を中心に三十七体もの仏が平和に共存しています。この形がフラクタルであることは、大日如来がいたるところにあまねくあることを意味しているのです。

この曼荼羅は、五彩色ではなく金銀泥だけで細密に描かれた高雄曼荼羅からインスピレーションを得て、銀の和紙の切り絵と銀製の水引きを用いて金剛界を表現しております。高雄曼荼羅を描く金銀泥の銀をイメージし、切り絵は想いをかたちづくり、水引きは人を想い、人を繋ぐものとして、空海の想いや教えを現代に繋ぐ曼荼羅に取り入れました。

なお、この曼荼羅は、数々の伝説を残した弘法大師・空海の教えや、西国八十八か所の魅力、真言密教の神秘を学ぶ「KUKAI JOURNEY OF THE SKY」のメインビジュアルとして採用されております。
空海自身の姿ではなく曼荼羅が採用された理由は、曼荼羅は空海の想いと教えが詰め込まれた「かたち」だからです。

空から見る四国の山々や雲の様子など、地上からは想像もつかないような壮大な自然を感じていただきたいとの想いから、移動手段にヘリコプターを用い、空海の足跡を空から巡る新しい旅として、「KUKAI JOURNEY OF THE SKY」は生まれました。曼荼羅に込められた教えに想いを馳せながら、「KUKAI JOURNEY OF THE SKY」を楽しんでいただきたいと願っております。

The first encounter of the Japanese with mandalas was about 1200 years ago, in the early Heian
period. The person who brought mandalas to Japan was Kukai, who would later be named as Kobo
Daishi. Kukai traveled to Tang China as a member of the Japanese envoy and was recognized by
his master, Huiguan, as the only legitimate successor at the pinnacle of the Chinese Esoteric
Buddhism.

He directly received important scriptures and ritual implements, including the mandala,
from Huiguan.
The mandalas that Kukai brought back included two types: the Womb Realm Mandala and the
Vajra Realm Mandala. The Womb Realm Mandala illustrates the process of attaining enlightenment
as taught by Shakyamuni, while the Vajra Realm Mandala depicts the overall wisdom obtained as a
result of enlightenment.

The Vajra Realm Mandala is divided into nine sections, each containing the same pattern as the
whole. This means that even when taking a part, the same pattern of the whole appears. This kind
of structure is called a fractal. A fractal shape like the Vajra Realm Mandala can be created by
repeatedly dividing a square into nine parts and removing the center.

This is known as the Sierpiński carpet, a fractal in a two-dimensional plane.
In the Vajra Realm Mandala, thirty-seven Buddhas coexist peacefully around the central Dainichi
Nyorai. The fractal nature of this form signifies that Dainichi Nyorai is omnipresent everywhere.
Inspired by the Kaohsiung Mandala, which was painted in fine detail using only gold and silver mud
rather than the five colors, this mandala expresses the Vajrayana world using silver washi paper
cutouts and silver mizuhiki.
The kirie paper cutouts form our thoughts and feelings, and the mizuhiki (water drawer) connects
people to each other.

This mandala has been adopted as the main visual for the “KUKAI JOURNEY OF THE SKY” to learn
about the teachings of Kobo-Daishi Kukai, who left behind many legends, the attractions of the 88
sacred places in the western part of Japan, and the mysteries of Shingon esoteric Buddhism.
The mandala, rather than Kukai himself, was chosen because it is a “form” filled with Kukai's
thoughts and teachings.

The “KUKAI JOURNEY OF THE SKY” was created as a new journey to follow in Kukai's footsteps
from the sky, using a helicopter as the means of transportation, in the hope that visitors will
experience the grandeur of nature as seen from the sky, including the mountains and clouds of
Shikoku, which are unimaginable from the ground.
We hope that you will enjoy the “KUKAI JOURNEY OF THE SKY” while contemplating the teachings
contained in the mandala.
